The Haute-Loire is a promised land for walkers. The Way of Saint James

The starting point of one of the routes of the Way of Saint James of Compostela at le Puy-en-Velay allows the pilgrims to enjoy the most picturesque section of the trail, between Velay, Margeride and Aubrac.

The Stevenson Trail

And what a memorable experience it is to follow the journey that Robert-Louis Stevenson made accompanied by a donkey answering to the sweet name of Modestine. From the vast volcanic plateaus of the Velay to the Cévennes, crossing the gorges of the wild Loire, what splendid stories were set down in purple ink by the author who would make his name with the famous 'Treasure Island'!

Walking and hiking for everyone

The shorter walks in the Haute-Loire are also a must. The footpaths, which are increasingly well marked out and maintained thanks to the Respirando brand, spread throughout the region and are referenced in the 'Topo-guide' trail books produced by the French Long Distance Hiking Federation. The Haute-Loire counts over 400 short walk footpaths winding through the gorges of the Allier and the Loire rivers, crossing listed towns and villages and passing through great expanses of greenery.

Last but not least the quality accommodation options, some of which are labelled Respirando, ensure that walkers can relax in comfort after the efforts of the day.
