The Puy-de-Dôme department, in the heart of Auvergne and the centre of France, takes its name from the highest peak of the Chaîne des Puys. And it’s this peak that affords fantastic views of the Dômes mountains, views which you’ll be able to enjoy after a walk around the volcanoes of Auvergne.
With around 400,000 hectares of protected countryside, the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne is an ecotourist’s paradise in France. And the best way of appreciating it is undoubtedly on foot. Seasoned hikers will prefer the Plomb du Cantal and Puy de Sancy, whilst the less experienced enthusiasts will love walking in the Chaîne des Puys.
In the heart of the nature park, the GR 4 hiking trail includes various marked routes that are perfect for family walks in Auvergne. One thing you’ll really love is going up the Puy du Pariou (a mountain that is famous for Volvic mineral water), where wooden steps have been installed to make it easier to climb as well as to avoid damaging its slopes.
Vulcania park, which is in the heart of the Chaîne des Puys, is an opportunity to learn all you want to know about volcanology all over the world, in a fun atmosphere.
