Volcanoes: nature at its most impressive

Auvergne's volcanoes are sleeping giants in the heart of France.

The Puy de Dôme

One of Auvergne's most famous volcanoes, the Puy de Dôme, reaches up to an altitude of 1,465 m. It offers an unbeatable view across the Chaîne des Puys and the surrounding landscapes. Take a ride on the new rackrailway the Panoramique des Dômes to reach the summit.

The Chaîne des Puys, stretching away into the horizon

The Chaîne des Puys is a volcanic area stretching out for more than 30 km and located in the centre of Europe's largest regional nature park: the Parc Naturel des Volcans d’Auvergne (the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park). There's nothing more relaxing than hiking or simply strolling freely through this marvellous open, natural area.
The natural lakes which have appeared in the craters are another "must-see" natural feature.

The Volcanoes of the Cantal

The Plomb du Cantal volcano is Europe's largest, with a diameter exceeding that of Etna (Sicily, Italy). The Puy Mary (1,758 m or 5,767 ft) is also one of France's leading natural heritage sites and perfect for hiking or even paragliding for the most adventurous!

A lifestyle and a community based around the volcanoes

Over the centuries, small villages and later ski resorts sprang up on the slopes or at the foot of these Auvergne volcanoes. A visit to these incredibly charming villages is always an unforgettable experience for anyone seeking authenticity, tradition and attractive rural landscapes. It's also a great opportunity to discover traditional French produce and producers while doing your bit for nature by encouraging green tourism.

Learn more about the science of volcanoes

The Vulcania amusement park enables both beginners and enthusiasts to gain a better understanding of the gigantic "time capsules" which are the region’s volcanoes. The Volcan de Lemptégy takes visitors on a ride through a real volcano, a former quarry site. You'll learn all about the geology of the area.
