Perched on the rocky peak from which it takes its name, Montpeyroux overlooks the Allier Valley. This small fortified village is built from local arkose sandstone, giving it a surprising "coppery" luminosity. Exporting arkose was the main trade of Montpeyroux, the stone was used for the Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica in Clermont-Ferrand as well as the Saint-Austremoine abbey church in nearby Issoire.

In the 19th century, Montpeyroux became a winemaking town and vineyards filled the slopes around the village. Several remain today, and young winegrowers are renewing the history of Montpeyroux.

The main attraction of the town is Its Romanesque dungeon tower, an excellent example of military architecture in Montpeyroux, Auvergne during the 12th and 13th centuries. From the top (open from April to October), you can overlook the village’s rooftops from a height of more than 30 m (98 ft) and take in the breathtaking view. Visually impaired visitors can discover the village thanks to its tactile model and the "sensory tour" specially prepared for them.
