The prefecture of the Cantal département is overlooked by the Massif Cantalien, the largest volcano in Europe. The commercial and tourist crossroads of Upper Auvergne, it is a modern city built around the old quarters with their winding streets. Aurillac is also proud to be known as the “capital of the countryside” thanks to its AOC cheeses (Cantal, Salers) and culinary specialities (truffade - a potato and cheese dish, and pounti - pork and prune meatloaf).

The western gateway to the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, Mauriac and its black-lava houses are set at an altitude of 700 metres between the Dordogne and Puy Mary. Notre-Dame des Miracles Basilica is a lovely example of Auvergnat Romanesque art.
The other attraction of this Cantal sub-prefecture is without a doubt the Mauriac Val Saint-Jean tourist complex (lake, accommodation, activities).

High up on a basal platform at an altitude of 880 metres, Saint-Flour overlooks the nearby A75 motorway from its walls. The majestic Gothic Cathedral immediately seizes your attention. The Museum of Upper Auvergne and the Alfred Douet Museum in the old Consular House bear witness to the medieval character of Saint-Flour, which regularly comes to life during traditional festivities such as the Festival del Païs et les Hautes Terres (Festival of the Land and the High Country).
