This is
the most common type of volcano found in the Chaîne
des Puys.
The activity of Strombolian volcanoes (named after the Stromboli
Volcano in Sicily) is continuous.
The crater contains constantly boiling molten lava and,
from time to time, the volcano ejects a column of gas and
rock.
When this type of volcano is active, eruptions are very
frequent (several per hour).
Outside the crater, the materials (lava and scoria) slide
down the scree-covered slope. Sometimes, in the most violent
periods, lava can come flooding out.
Although specialists consider the Chaîne
des Puys to be a museum of pure forms, sometimes nested craters
(caused by multiple explosions) can be found, as at the Puy
de Côme, or breached craters, such as the Puy de la
Vache and Lassolas (the cone is open on one side from a flare
in the crater).
