When enamelled, it decorates
our tables or adorns our towns on multicoloured signs. Volvic
stone, or trachyandesite, has been used since Gallo-Roman
times. It is easily recognised. Dark in colour, it covers
Notre-Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral in Clermont-Ferrand
and the Cathedral of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Extracted from tile-making rock, lauze was a
traditional roofing material in mountain villages. You will
easily recognise its "alternating scales" in Salers,
Riom-ès-Montagnes or Murat. Pouzzolane is the spongy-looking
red rock used on roads, tennis courts and horse-racing tracks.
